Happy Day

A package arrived this morning at school.  Typewriter in the Sky & Fear by L. Ron Hubbard.  It is in the condition I expected, wait for the Close Up to check it out.  It’s not a great copy but I’m very happy to have it at the price I got it.  It’s commonly a pricey title.  I haven’t had a book arrive for a while and I’ve been missing the buzz of opening those packages.  It’s nice to have that feeling again.

Did he write this before going all Scientology on the world? I’ve never read his sci-fi as the whole ‘Church’ of Scientology thing makes me gnash my teeth.

    • See the link to his wikipedia site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Ron_Hubbard) for more detail on Hubbard, but these were written and published just after Dianetics went public in 1950. They are by all accounts two of his very best works and Typewriter in the Sky is considered classic from that era. From what I could determine (and I haven’t read them yet), there isn’t any connection between the two. I don’t know enough about Scientology to make a comment one way or the other anyway.

Good old Wikipedia. I think I’m still likely to steer clear of his sci-fi. I have seen close-up the results of Scientology and the way it can destroy family ties. Tragic stuff and about as spiritual as worshipping cheese. Still, look forward to your review of Hubbard the writer, to see if it changes my mind about his fiction.
